Jefferson on Pikketty

    Professor,

    While I’m certainly not a redistributionist, I had a thought that I’d love your input on. Jefferson wanted the Virginia laws of primogeniture abolished because he saw the oligarchy as being incompatible with Republican government.

    How do you think he would feel about the wealth inequality that bleeding heart bernie bumblers so often complain about? Do you think he would see it as a situation approaching oligarchy that needs to be fixed, or have no problem with it?

    Jefferson did not oppose private property, he opposed artificial concentration of it in his Virginia (where ~85 families owned about 2/3 of today’s state).

    I recommend, by the way, that you check out Phil Magness’s several blogs demonstrating that Piketty’s statistics are completely mistaken.
